Make Home Part of Your Carry-On

Ready for an easy tip that can bring calm, comfort and care to your travel buddy?

The nose knows what HOME smells like! … Read on.

A familiar blanket, small towel or other small item carrying the scent of home can provide a reassuring sensory cue in an unfamiliar environment.

Bring something familiar on your next trip, careful to not overpack your pet’s immediate space. They need room to settle comfortably.

Palms & Paws Travel Tip: Sleep with your pet’s travel blanket for a night or two before departure. To their nose, you just packed a little piece of home.

Charlie's Pet-Safe Harvest Stuffing

Here’s a classic Palms & Paws holiday recipe created especially for our cats and dogs to enjoy.

After all, they’ve been watching us cook all afternoon, and have been patiently (or not so patiently) waiting. This is for them.

Click here to download your Palms & Paws recipe and fill your home with thanks giving!

Charlie’s Harvest Stuffing (for Cats & Dogs)
 Ingredients:

 1 cup organic pumpkin purée
½ cup finely chopped organic carrots
½ cup cooked organic quinoa
¼ cup organic peas
1 tablespoon organic olive oil
1 cage-free organic egg (or flax egg for protein sensitive pets)
Optional: cubes of organic sourdough bread

Consult your veterinarian if your pet has food sensitivities or allergies.

Instructions:

  1. Ask your human to preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine all ingredients
  3. Spread into a small baking dish or muffin tin.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden.
  5. Cool completely before serving.

Serving tip: A tablespoon or two is perfect for most pets — treats should make up no more than 10% of their daily diet.

Serve lukewarm and enjoy the moment together.

Keep Calm & Travel On

Here’s something worth remembering: YOU are part of your pet’s travel experience.

Dogs and cats can be sensitive to our behavior, tone of voice and changes in routine. When travel gets hectic, a little calm and predictability can help.

Try this: Before departure, take a few quiet minutes together. Settle beside your pet, breathe slowly, speak normally, and offer gentle affection if they welcome it.

No big production. No frantic last-minute fussing. Just another moment of your day together.

You provide a familiar voice, a familiar person, and a moment to settle.

Travel Tip: Practice calm moments at home several days before the trip. Familiar routines are easier (for all of you) to lean on when everything else is new.

Bonus Tip: This is as good for you as it is for your pet.

Ask Dr. Kevin Anything

Ask Dr. Kevin!

Traveling with pets comes with questions. Lots of them. We’ve put together a collection of travel articles and a comprehensive travel guide to help you prepare.

Here are a few good places to start:

Q: What should I pack in my pet’s travel kit?

Dr. Kevin: The essentials, plus a few things you hope you won’t need. We’ve made a handy checklist so you don’t have to remember everything yourself.

Happy Travel Guide

Q: How do I know if my pet needs calming medication for travel?

Dr. Kevin: Plan ahead with your veterinarian. Some pets benefit from medication for anxiety or motion sickness, but travel day should never be the first time you try something new. Your veterinarian can help you choose the right approach and test it safely beforehand.

👉 Read: Travel Guide, Pt. 2: During Flight

Q: My service dog has never flown before. How can I prepare her?

Dr. Kevin: Practice is important, especially when your dog needs to stay focused and comfortable in an unfamiliar environment. RetrievAir is also involved in service dog training initiatives, so we’re exploring what that looks like.

Palms & Paws Travel Experience

Q: We’re hosting the whole family for Thanksgiving. Any advice for keeping our pets comfortable?

Dr. Kevin: Give them a quiet place to retreat, protect their usual routines, and make sure guests understand your pet’s boundaries. Holiday gatherings are exciting for us, but can be overwhelming for them.

Finally, Coming Home

This Thanksgiving, we’re celebrating the rescue organizations, volunteers, foster families, veterinarians and transport partners who help make homecomings possible for dogs and cats without a home.

There’s something especially meaningful about the journey that ends with a rescue pet finding their forever family.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give thanks this season, consider supporting an animal rescue organization in your community.

They will always welcome support, donations, volunteering, fostering, or sometimes simply snuggling. Need ideas? We’ve got them.

Until next month…
