The PAWDCAST:

The Art of Foolishness

Palms & Paws+ PAWDCAST - Ep. 007 - (running time: 14 mins)

This month, Dr. Kevin and Greta attempt something extremely ambitious: Being serious.

They do not succeed.

Because the truth is: Life with pets is absurd. The habits we cannot explain. The games that make no sense. The moments that make us pause and say, “…did that really just happen?”

And here’s the problem: Those are the very best parts of being a pet parent, aren’t they?

Dr. Kevin and Greta explore:

  • whether something is funny, or not funny
  • how silliness builds trust and connection
  • why laughter might actually be the point

Because sometimes the deepest connection happens in the most unexpected, slightly ridiculous moments.

The Case of

The Mysterious Smell

At some point, every pet parent has experienced this. You walk into a room… pause… and say:

“What is that SMELL?”

And then you see them…

Your sweet, innocent, absolutely-not-responsible pet… looking up at you with just a hint of guilt and a touch of pride. We’ve all been there. You are not alone.

Why dogs roll in terrible smells
Dogs roll in strong scents for a few reasons:

  • instinct to mask their scent (a nod to their wild ancestry)
  • curiosity and sensory stimulation
  • or simply… a bold personal choice

Translation: They found something terrible and thought,
“This would be great to have all over my body.”

And Cats?
Cats take a slightly different approach. While they may not roll in something questionable… they will absolutely interact with it, and then proudly deliver it to you. Sometimes gently. Sometimes not.

They expect acknowledgement. Possibly praise. So do not be surprised if they seem slightly offended when you react by removing it immediately. Humph.

Cats:

  • investigate
  • claim temporary ownership
  • present findings
  • judge your reaction

Natural De-Stink Protocol
(For when things have gone too far)

General odors:
baking soda + water paste (apply, sit, rinse)

Skunk-level emergencies (vet-recommended formula):
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
2 Tablespoons of liquid Ivory Brand soap
Apply immediately. Rinse thoroughly. Do not store.

And if this happens mid-dinner party… Just know:
These are the stories that get better every year.

PB "Turkey" Legs
(Just Kidding)

They look like turkey legs. They are not. Happy April Fools! Your pet will love them anyway.

PB “Turkey” Legs Treats (for Cats & Dogs)
 Ingredients:

Treat Base:
1 cup smooth organic peanut butter (xylitol-free)
½ cup mashed organic banana
1 ½ cups organic oat flour
1 tbsp organic coconut oil
2–4 tbsp warm water (as needed)

Frosting:
½ cup plain unsweetened organic Greek yogurt
1 tsp organic coconut oil (optional for smoothness)

Instructions:

  1. Ask your human to preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. Combine peanut butter, banana, oil. Add flour and mix until soft dough forms. Add water to make dough moldable but not sticky.
  3. Roll dough into small oval shapes, gently pinching one end to create “handle.” Aim for slightly exaggerated drumstick appearance, for fun.
  4. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 18-22 minutes until firm and lightly golden.
  6. Cool completely before adding topping.
  7. Mix yogurt (whip in optional oil) until smooth and creamy.
  8. Spread dollop onto each leg “handle” and refrigerate briefly for a firmer finish.

Serve with a straight face.
(And please… send us a pet selfie.)

Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days due to the yogurt topping.

Always consult your primary care veterinarian if your pet has food sensitivities or allergies.

The Foolishness Ritual

Playing with your pet is one of life’s great joys.

It’s ridiculous.
It’s unpredictable.
It’s sometimes… a full workout.

And the truth is, they don’t care if you look silly. They expect it.

This month, instead of trying to get play “right,”
we invite you to practice something else: The Foolishness Ritual.

  1. Start with setting aside some time for dedicated play with your pet. 5 minutes of dedicated fun! What a treat, right? Let go of looking composed, productive, or impressive. Be ready for anything. Ready? Let’s go.
  2. Ask your pet if they’d like to play. Let them take the lead. Say yes to their answer. Play could look like toy-time, zoomies, or a snuggle-fest. It’s all play.
  3. Follow their lead. Dogs will insist. Cats will suggest. Both will know exactly what they’re doing.
  4. Allow yourself to look ridiculous. Make the noise. Do the voice. Run the extra lap, or do the little odd hop.
  5. Let yourself laugh out loud. Chuckle, giggle, snort. Take a deep breath of joy into your lungs, and exhale a burst of gratitude and appreciation for this moment.

It doesn’t get much better than this. Happy April Fools!

Pet-o-Scope

Happy Birthday!
Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Aries dogs are bold, impulsive, and fully committed to whatever moment they are in. What they need most is structure around their energy. Clear boundaries, consistent leadership, and intentional play help channel their excitement into confidence rather than chaos.

Aries cats need a balance of autonomy and interaction. Give them choice, provide stimulation, and offer just enough challenge to keep them engaged. When understood, Aries cats are playful, expressive, quietly brilliantly navigating their world.

Download your Aries Pet-o-Scope card and add it to your growing collection.

Ask Your Q

Thank you for submitting your questions! Dr. Kevin, our head Palms & Paws veterinarian, is here to answer them – big and small – from both humans & pets.

Q: I keep seeing posts saying kibble is bad for dogs and they should be on a raw diet. Thoughts? (Joy, human)
Dr. Kevin: High quality kibble that meets AAFCO standards is complete and balanced and backed by extensive research. Raw diets are not recommended as the potential risks outweigh the potential benefits. The main risks include potential infection with E.coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and these risks extend as a safety concern for households as well.

The best approach:

  • prioritize balance over trends
  • consult your veterinarian
  • make any diet transition gradually

Instead of raw, if you are interested in a home-cooked diet, please consult with your veterinarian. Additionally, there is an incredible resource called Balance.IT. This is a website that allows you to craft a home-cooked diet that is nutritionally balanced, and supported by veterinarians.

Q: I’ve been staring at my owner (Lawrence) for 7 minutes now, and counting. When will he get the hint? (Sammy, dog)
Dr. Kevin: Stick with it, buddy, and don’t give up. You’ll train him eventually.

Q: My dog, Sammy, just stared at me for 7 minutes straight without blinking. Is he seeing something I’m not? (Lawrence, human)
Dr. Kevin: Yes. You opened something interesting earlier. He remembers.
