Once again, Dr. Kevin, our head Palms & Paws veterinarian, is here to answer your questions and curiosities from both humans & pets. You asked some wonderful and important questions!
Q: What’s the best enrichment for indoor cats? (MoBear, the cat)
Dr. Kevin: Great question. Indoor cats thrive on variety and choice. Puzzle feeders, rotating toys, window perches, and short interactive play sessions all provide mental and physical stimulation. Even something as simple as moving furniture or introducing a cardboard box can spark healthy curiosity. Every cat is different, so notice what truly engages yours.
Q: What should I do if I think my dog has eaten chocolate? (Macy Grey, dog)
Dr. Kevin: Contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately if you believe your dog has ingested chocolate or any other toxic substance. The type and amount of chocolate matter, and timing is important. When in doubt, it is always safest to call right away.
Q: Why do dogs love squirrels so much? (Tux, cat)
Dr. Kevin: Squirrels activate a dog’s prey drive. Fast movement, unpredictable behavior, and high-pitched sounds flip an ancient neurological switch. It is instinct, not obsession. Training and redirection can help channel that excitement in healthy ways.
Q: My friend told me human shampoo is not great for dogs. Is that true? (Shelly, human)
Dr. Kevin: Yes. Human shampoo is formulated for a different skin pH and can be irritating or drying for dogs. Using a pet-specific shampoo helps protect their skin barrier and keeps coats healthy. When it comes to grooming products, species matters.
Q: My cat loves to catch mice and leave them in the kitchen. Is that a gift? (Charles, human)
Dr. Kevin: Believe it or not, yes. Cats are natural hunters, and bringing prey to you can be a sign of trust and bonding. In your cat’s mind, they may be sharing, teaching, or contributing to the household. It is love, feline-style.
