Hear

“Howl-a-ween” poem by Dr. Kevin

Each month, we’ll share a special audio to delight the ears, and fill your hearts with laughter, joy, and maybe a few wistful tears. Whether by song, poem or story, here’s where we get to indulge in the smallest, yet most profound moments with your pet families. Yeah, we DO want to hear all about it!

This month: Dr. Kevin reads a short poem we wrote just for you, dear furry friends. Ask your human to hit play. Then close your eyes and let your imagination soar.

Dogs pick up sounds up to four times farther than your human’s ever could. Yes, that’s why you know the delivery truck is coming before anyone else in your household. Be patient… they’ll hear it eventually.

Cats: You pretend to ignore your human calling… but secretly, you can hear things even dogs can’t. (Fun fact: you can detect ultrasonic sounds, like the squeak of a mouse from across the yard. Choose wisely what you admit to.)

Smell

Charlie Nose Best

No one knows smell like Charlie, our CCO (Chief Canine Officer).

Seriously, his nose could be a GPS. Did you know a dog’s nose has up to 300 million scent receptors compared to a human’s 5 million—and cats can detect scents at concentrations up to 1,000 times lower than what humans can smell? To all the dogs reading this right now, we honor your nose as the true superpower it is.

That’s why artificial fragrances (like plug-ins, sprays, or scented candles) can feel overwhelming or even harmful to you. If it makes your human sneeze, imagine what it does to you!

We’ve got you.

Here are some natural options you can recommend to your humans to fill your home with the smell of October yumminess, while looking out for your snout:

Try this: Simmer pots with cinnamon sticks, apple slices, and cloves (safe in the air, not in your bowl).

Essential oils? Careful—most are toxic to pets. Stick with fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, mint) in water bowls or windowsills.

Pumpkin spice? Enjoy the real deal with actual pumpkin—not a chemical “scent!”

Pumpkin & Oat Bites (Cats & Dogs)
Ingredients:

1 cup organic pumpkin purée (unsweetened, no spices)

2 cups organic rolled oats (ground into flour if your cat prefers smoother texture)

1 egg (cage-free, pasture-raised)

Instructions:

  1. Ask your human to preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix pumpkin, oats, and egg until dough forms.
  3. Roll into small balls or press flat with a paw (optional, but fun).
  4. Bake for 15–20 minutes, until firm.
  5. Cool completely before serving.

Dogs: Crunch as-is, or smear with a touch of peanut butter (xylitol-free).

Cats: Sprinkle tuna flakes or crumble into smaller bits for easy nibbling.

Halloween PSA from Charlie & Tux: No candy for pets. Ever. Stick with these bites, followed by a pet dental chew if you’re feeling extra clever. Your smile (and your Palms & Paws veterinarian) will thank you.

Touch

The Art of Calm Amid the Chaos

Halloween is noisy. Doorbells, costumes, kids squealing “BOO!” You don’t need stress—you need sanctuary.

Try this:

For Dogs: Have your human apply gentle pressure at the base of your skull (where head meets neck). This releases tension.

For Cats: Ask them to softly stroke between your shoulder blades or under the chin. It signals, “You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

Palms & Paws approved, and backed by the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association.

Mystic Musings

The Black Cat’s Tale (or Tail)

To all the black cats reading this… yes, this is your moment. And yes, we’re all a little bit jealous of you. Long before Halloween costumes, black cats were revered. Egyptians called them sacred. Sailors believed they kept ships safe. And in Scotland, a black cat on your doorstep meant good fortune was about to arrive. This season, we’ll celebrate along with you—as living history, as the convergence of mystery and beauty.

Each month, we’ll turn to the stars and honor that 6th sense that dogs and cats share, to ponder the bigger questions in life. Pet owners know and rely on your magical “knowingness,” that deep look of wisdom in your eyes. Words can’t describe this adequately – but then, words aren’t needed in the silent exchange of love, or a quiet purr, or a contented sigh. Thank you for that.

Wisdom from the Chief Feline Officer

Tux, Chief Feline Officer, Palms & Paws

Our favorite feline philosopher has profound A’s to your pets’ Q’s. To all the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens reading this, feel free to submit your questions for Tux to answer below.

Q: How do I avoid spooky poop after Halloween? (Rover the Dog)

Tux: Don’t. Eat. Candy. Stick with pumpkin, buddy. Trust me: dignity > diarrhea.

Q: The doorbell keeps ringing—HELP! (Luna the Cat)
Tux: Claim the closet shelf. It’s not hiding. It’s commanding the situation from above.

Q: My human dressed me as a taco. How do I recover? (Max the Dog)

Tux: Own it. Walk like the runway is yours. Confidence makes even lettuce couture.

We’ll be back next month with more heart, more joy, more stories just for you.
